Elizabeth “Lib” Phelps Gower Scott, a beacon of joy and love, left this world on July 31, 2025, at the remarkable age of 100. Born on December 31, 1924, in Paris, Tennessee, she exuded warmth and kindness throughout her life, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Lib's journey through life was as rich and varied as the vibrant colors she cherished, particularly the color pink, which mirrored her joyful spirit. Her early days were spent working at JCPenney, where she began her career at the meager wage of 35 cents an hour while still in high school. It was here she received a touching testament to her character; a reference letter penned and signed by Mr. J.C. Penney himself. This humble beginning set the stage for a fulfilling career spanning 26 years at AT&T, where she brought her trademark happiness and diligence to her work.
A proud graduate of Grove High School in Paris, Lib carried the lessons learned there into her future endeavors. Her devotion extended far beyond the workplace, deeply rooted in her faith and commitment to her Christ and her church, Woodland Baptist. As a dedicated member, she sang in the choir, nurtured the youngest members in the nursery, and gracefully took on the roles of secretary and treasurer for her Sunday school class. Her laughter and uplifting spirit forged bonds that enriched the community, making her beloved by all.
Lib's life was marked by profound love for her family, her greatest achievement. Married to James Gower for 15 years, their time together was beautiful and full, though tragically cut short by his untimely passing at the young age of 35. It was overwhelming for her, being a single mother of two with no college degree. She got back to work and knew her main priority was raising her two boys. Lib remained single for 15 years before embarking on a new chapter with Willard Scott, affectionately known as "Scottie." Although he too departed this life before her, the love they shared added another 15 of richness to her long and storied life.
Left to cherish her memory are her devoted sons, Robert "Bob" Gower (Cindy) and Steven Gower; stepdaughter, Linda Cody; grandchildren, Brian, Rebekah, Kimberly, Brett, and Ben; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, James "Jimmy" Gower; second husband, Willard “Scottie” Scott; daughter-in-law, Kay Gower; parents, Everett and Annie Phelps; her three sisters and their husbands; and two brothers-in-law on the Gower side and their wives.
A small, informal graveside service will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday, August 7, 2025, at Hollywood Cemetery. There will be a formal memorial service at a later date.
In life, Elizabeth Phelps Gower Scott embodied joy, love, and devotion. She has taken her place among the Family of God and awaits her next opportunity to serve Him. We celebrate her extraordinary life and the legacy of love she leaves behind, forever etched in the hearts of those who had the honor of calling her family and friend.
