William "Bill" C. Branson

May 15, 1931 — May 27, 2026

Jackson, TN

William "Bill" C. Branson, a proud veteran, cherished family man, and a dedicated public servant, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at West Tennessee Post Acute of Jackson, Tennessee, at the age of 95.

Born on May 15, 1931, in Overall, Tennessee, now known as Salem, Tennessee, Bill's life was marked by steadfast commitment and service. He first answered the call to serve his country as a proud member of the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. From December 1950 until September 1954, Bill served as a radio operator. His assignments took him near the front lines in Korea at an Army post near Chuncheon, as well as to Brunswick Naval Air Station in Maine. Following his military service, he began his college education at Middle Tennessee State University and earned a degree in History. While studying and raising a family, he contributed his expertise in aviation electronics and aircraft modification, working on important systems such as F-86 radar, C-54 radio maintenance, and components for B-29 and R4D aircraft. Bill also ventured into entrepreneurship, owning and operating Smyrna Mobile Home Park from 1958 until 1974.
His professional career was predominantly spent with the Internal Revenue Service, where he served as a Revenue Officer across Columbia, Nashville, and Jackson, Tennessee. After 25 years of dedicated service, he retired in 1990 as a GS-12 Supervisor, earning respect and admiration from colleagues and community alike.

Bill was an avid traveler and outdoor enthusiast. As a longstanding member of the Good Sam Camping Club, he and his wife relished exploring the country via camper, frequently taking winter trips to Plant City, Florida, and journeying extensively from California to New England, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. Always a handyman, he possessed an uncanny ability to fix nearly everything, a talent he cherished throughout his life. His spiritual journey culminated later in life; after many years of devoted church service, at the age of 90, Bill embraced his faith fully by accepting Jesus Christ as his Savior, a decision inspired by the witness of his daughter and son-in-law. This profound commitment marked one of his proudest accomplishments.

Bill's loving family was the cornerstone of his life. He is survived by his son, Steven Carl Branson of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; his daughter, Patricia Branson Hale, and her husband Steve of Jackson, Tennessee; and his son, Robert Mark Branson, and wife Adrianne of Knoxville, Tennessee. He also leaves behind ten grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren, including twin great-grandchildren soon to arrive, whose lives will carry forward his legacy.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of sixty-three years, Sarah Muriel Smith Branson; his parents, William Carlyle and Willie Mae Porterfield Branson; and his half-brother, Edward Carl Branson, M.D.
