Wanda Lorraine Merritt, a beloved resident of Jackson, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at Jackson Madison County General Hospital following a sudden illness. She was 79 years old.
Born on December 14, 1946, in Jackson, Tennessee, Lorraine was a cherished daughter to Orion M. and Laura Bell Raines Merritt. Lorraine moved to Chicago, Illinois in her young adult years and became active in the banking industry, beginning as a teller and retired as the administrative assistant to the President. She remained there until her retirement from the banking industry and returned to Jackson, TN in 2001.
She was an avid Gardner and collector of stuff bears, Aunt Jemima figurines and bedspreads. She was always looking for a good deal on Amazon. She was a member of Lighthouse Church of Jackson.
Lorraine leaves behind a legacy treasured by her family and friends. She is survived by her devoted caregiver and sister cousin, Brenda Dycus, whose companionship and support were steadfast throughout their lives Lorraine’s memory will continue to be honored by Brenda’s children, Jonathan Dycus, Chad Dycus and Hunter Dycus, each of whom appreciated her presence and guidance. She is also lovingly remembered by her cousins, Beverly Raines, Teresa Raines, Linda Rowan, Doug Leyh and Doris Jean Weddington. Special friends and extended family, including Joyce Ross and Julia Futral, remain grateful for the kindness, warmth, and generosity that Lorraine consistently showed.
She was preceded in death by her father, Orion M., and her mother, Laura Bell Raines Merritt, both of whom held an integral place in her heart and story.
The community is invited to pay their respects with family and friends on Monday, August 17, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Arrington Funeral Directors. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM in the Chapel of Arrington Funeral Directors with, Pastor Donald Lance officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery in Milan, TN.
Wanda Lorraine Merritt will be remembered for her steadfast presence, the way she cherished her loved ones, and the dignity with which she lived her life. Her kindness and spirit will resonate in the hearts of her family and all those fortunate enough to know her. May she be at peace, and may her memory continue to inspire those who remain.
