Vernon W. Austin, a cherished father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at his residence in Beech Bluff, Tennessee, surrounded by his loving family. He was 92 years old.
Born on May 13, 1934, in Finger, Tennessee, Vernon was a proud graduate of Chester County High School. His early years set the foundation for a life marked by dedication, service, and unwavering commitment to family and community.
Vernon honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was assigned to the 261 Signal Corp and the motor pool operating out of Fort Bliss, Texas. His military service reflected his deep patriotism and steadfast sense of duty.
Following his time in the military, Vernon devoted the majority of his career to AT&T. He retired as a Lead Wireman, having contributed many years of skilled work and leadership. In his later years, he returned to the family homeplace in Beech Bluff, Tennessee, where he treasured the peace of his roots.
He was a man of many interests and hobbies. Vernon enjoyed tending to his garden, working diligently on automobiles and tractors, and was an enthusiastic spectator of NASCAR and basketball games on television. He held a passionate allegiance to the Dallas Cowboys, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Chicago White Sox, often sharing his love of sports with those around him.
Known for his steadfast presence and reliability, Vernon was always there for his family—a source of strength and comfort throughout his life. His memory will be lovingly held by those who knew his gentle heart and solid character.
Vernon is survived by his son Ken Austin and wife Kathy; his life partner Betty Harvey, along with her daughter Jenny Elder (Brian) and grandchildren Jeremy and Nicki; his brother Ray Austin; his sister Linda King; sister-in-law Anita Austin; grandchildren Kenny Austin, Jr., Tabitha Kairis (Wes), and Jessica Austin (Josh Lucas); and great-grandchildren Madison Austin, Brooklyn Austin, Rylee Austin, and Brayden Kairis. as well as numerous other family members and friends Their lives were deeply enriched by Vernon's presence and guidance.
He is preceded in death by his parents, W.C. and Sudie Bullman Austin, and his stepmother Mamie Austin; his brother David Austin; and sister-in-law Wanda Austin.
SERVICES: A time with family and friends will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM in the Chapel of Arrington Funeral Directors This will be followed by the funeral service at 4:00 p.m., with Rev. Opie Dodrell officiating. Burial will follow in Beech Bluff Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Kenny Austin, Wes Kairis, Josh Lucas, Brayden Kairis, Tabitha Kairis and Jessi Austin.
