Obituary

Sheryl (Sherry) Lee White Mitchell, a retired elementary school teacher of 32 years, passed away Tuesday morning from complications related to cancer. She was 66 years old. Mrs. Mitchell died peacefully at Jackson Madison County General Hospital after a year-long battle with lung and brain cancer. A graduate of the University of Tennessee and the University of Memphis, she taught in the Jackson Madison County School System from 1971 through 2003. During her career, she taught at Denmark, Beech Bluff, J.B. Young, and South Elementary School. Mrs. Mitchell began her teaching career at Daleville Elementary School in Daleville, Alabama, serving many of the children of military families stationed at Fort Rucker. Mrs. Mitchell was born in Pensacola, Florida but grew up in Cleveland, Tennessee. She leaves behind her mother, Ms. Anna Lee White of Cleveland, Tennessee, sister, Karen Chancey of Ringgold, Georgia, and brother, Donald White, Jr. of Athens, Tennessee. Her father, Donald White, Sr. preceded her in death in 1995. Mrs. Mitchell was married to Robert (Bob) Mitchell for 44 years and had three daughters, Melissa Spence and Shelley Carter of Jackson and Amy Bechtol of Hickory, North Carolina. She had five grandchildren, Hayden Spence, Harrison Spence, Will Bechtol, Anna Bechtol, and Benjamin Bechtol. The family will receive friends Thursday, October 16th from 4:00-7:00pm at Arrington Funeral Directors. Mrs. Mitchells funeral service will be Friday, October 17th at 2:00pm.
