Sara Sue Crews

August 10, 1939 — July 11, 2023

Jackson, Tennessee

Sara Sue Crews, a kind and caring soul, peacefully entered her heavenly home on July 11, 2023, at her residence surrounded by her loving husband and family.

She was born on August 10, 1939, in Jackson, Tennessee, the daughter of the late Dan and Wauneice Arwood Varnell.

Sue's life was marked by love, compassion, and a dedication to helping others. After graduating from Jackson High School in 1957, she pursued higher education and obtained a master's degree from the former Memphis State University.  Sue began her career as a Customer Service Representative with Bell South before transitioning to serve as a school secretary at Pope and Denmark Elementary. Her passion for education led her to become a devoted teacher within the system for twenty-two years.

Outside of the classroom, Sue embraced her musical talents as she faithfully served as the pianist at Oakfield Baptist Church for many years. Her fingertips dancing across the ivory keys brought joy and inspiration to those who gathered each week.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Sue found fulfillment through various hobbies and interests. Alongside her beloved husband Barney E. Crews Jr., she volunteered with the Center for Adult Reading and Enrichment, offering critical support to individuals seeking to enhance their literacy skills. Sue also dedicated herself to the Bi-Centennial Exchange Club, an organization committed to making positive contributions within the community. As a long-time member of Highland Park Church and an attendee of Sunday evening services at Wards Grove Baptist Church, she found solace in worship and spiritual connection.

Sue's legacy of love extends beyond her professional and community involvements into her cherished role as a wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend. She leaves behind her devoted husband Barney E. Crews Jr., who stood beside her throughout life's joys and challenges. Together they raised two children: Marjorie Renee Crews and Barney E. “Boots” Crews III and his wife Donna all of Jackson, TN. Sue's loving spirit also touched the lives of her sister Jennifer Martin of Martin, TN and two grandsons, Spencer Harrison, and Ben Crews.

SERVICES:  A visitation for Sue will be held at Arrington Funeral Directors on Monday, July 17, 2023, beginning at 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM with Rev. Ken Skelton and Rev. Mark Pendergrass officiating.  Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens.

Those serving as pallbearers will be her two grandsons, Spencer Harrison and Ben Crews and six nephews, Dilowe Barker, Emmitt Blankenship, Bob Blankenship, Robert Clifford, Ian Martin and Tony Fiddler.

Sara Sue Crews will forever be remembered for her unwavering kindness, genuine care for others, and a lifelong commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of those around her. Her legacy of love and compassion serves as an inspiration for all who had the privilege of knowing her.
