Samuel "Sam" H. Wylie

January 28, 1952 — April 20, 2024

Jackson, TN

Samuel "Sam" Wylie, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, peacefully entered his heavenly home on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital with his loving wife by his side at the age of 72.

Born to James and Ila Holland Wylie on January 28, 1952, in Mayfield, KY, Sam grew up in Mayfield where he graduated from Mayfield High School.  He pursued his education, earning his bachelor’s degree from David Lipscomb University in Nashville, TN, and a master’s degree from Murray State University.

Throughout his life, Sam touched the hearts of all who knew him. His warm smile, gentle demeanor, and unwavering kindness left an indelible mark on the community. Sam's dedication to his family was evident in every aspect of his life. He cherished his role as a husband, and his love for his wife, Beverly, knew no bounds. Together, they shared forty-six years of marriage.

Sam’s career started out on radio as a DJ for stations in Murray, KY and later McKenzie, TN.  He broadened his abilities as he was later employed as a news anchor for the 10:00 p.m. nightly news for a local station in Abilene, TX. He later found his niche as director of the “Way of Life” television ministry for Skyline Church of Christ, a position he held until his recent retirement. As a member of Skyline, Sam was instrumental in the Panama Missions, building and supporting the church there as well as growing Skyline’s love for cross-cultural mission work. Sam and Beverly served on the mission committee at Skyline for over fifteen years together. He had an appetite for life, and you could often hear him before you saw him, whistling as he walked. On Fridays, he could be found with the “Friday Fivesome,” playing golf on all the courses in West TN. Sam cherished trips to the beach with his family, where he would plant his chair in the sand, wear his Panama Jack hat, and keep a watchful eye on the waves, especially making sure Beverly didn’t go overboard from her float. He was an avid fan of the University of Kentucky basketball. He loved to eat oysters, joke with his buddies, and tease Beverly, until he would finally give her a wink and a grin. He approached every endeavor with determination and integrity, earning the respect and admiration of colleagues and friends alike.

Sam will be deeply missed. He leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and generosity that will continue to inspire others for generations to come.  He is survived by his loving wife, Beverly Rogers Wylie;  his children, Stefanie Wylie Stites and husband Andy of Cookeville, TN and Matthew Wylie and wife Janet of Jackson and three grandchildren, Weston, Samuel, and Sadie.

A celebration of Sam's life will be held on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at 4:00 p.m. at Skyline Church of Christ with Dr. Jeff Brown officiating.

The family will be receiving friends on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, beginning at 2:00 p.m. and continuing until 4:00 p.m. at the church.

The family is requesting that memorial contributions be directed to Jackson Christian School Spiritual Development, c/o Sam Wylie, 832 Country Club Lane, Jackson, TN 38305 or to Skyline Church of Christ, 1024 Skyline Drive, Jackson, TN 38301.
