“A good reputation is more valuable than costly perfume. And the day you die is better than the day you were born.” (Ecclesiastes 7:1)

It is with deep sadness, yet overwhelming gratitude that we share with you the passing of Philip Jett on December 14, 2023, at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. He was born in Jackson, MI on July 13, 1936, to Harbard and Thelma Barksdale Jett. The shadow of Dr. Jett’s impact stretches over thousands of people for more than sixty years.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Karen, who brought warmth into his life after the passing of Dr. Jett’s first wife, Marilyn. Karen was a constant source of support and love during their time together. He also leaves his sons, David Jett (Kathy) of Brandon MS, and Steven Jett (Dana) of Jackson, TN, as well as his daughter, Susan Larson (Lyle) of Goodlettsville, TN. His unconditional love and guidance shaped their lives, leaving behind wonderful memories that will be forever treasured.

His grandchildren held a special place in Dr. Jett's heart, bringing endless joy to his life. Kevin Jett (Blaire), Brian Jett (Lindsey), Caleb Jett (Beth), Peyton Jett, Adan Jett, Brandi Jett, Cade Jett, Eli Larson, Luke Larson, Maddie Larson, Ava Larson, Will Jeffers, and James Jeffers were all cherished by their grandfather, as well as numerous great-grandchildren.

The bond between Phil and Karen's children was one of unconditional love and acceptance. Andrea Jeffers, Sarah Looney, Myra Woods (Scott), Carson Looney (Jennie), and Laura Tomlin (Dwight) enriched Phil's life with their presence as well as their children.

Dr. Jett was predeceased by his brothers, Donnie Jett and Kenneth Jett, and a grandson, Gregory Hall.

He will be missed dearly. His consistent and tireless concern for others flowed through his servant heart. He was always available, ready, and willing to be the shoulder to cry on in times of sorrow, the rock to stand on in times of trouble, or the wisdom to give guidance in times of confusion. He will be missed dearly.

We have been blessed by him greatly. Dr. Jett had a way of making every person feel important. When he was with you or talking to you on the phone, you were his priority. He always had the right words at the right time to lift your spirit. Every moment spent with him was a moment where the Lord deposited wisdom, encouragement, and unconditional love. We have been blessed by him greatly.

We have been equipped by him beautifully. Dr. Jett didn't simply preach, he pastored. He didn't simply meet, he ministered. He didn't simply care about you, he had compassion for you. He truly lived what he proclaimed. Jesus said, “You will know them by their fruits.” (Matthew 7:20). The fruits of his life declared the grace and goodness of God to all. His focus was set squarely on Jesus. His life exemplified, “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” (Philippians 1:21). His consistent Christ-like example was a model for all of us to follow. We have been equipped by him beautifully.

Dr. Jett accepted a call to Englewood Baptist Church in June of 1983. Under his leadership, Englewood Baptist Church has continually grown and served the world. He began working with Wade Akins in Brazil in 1989. In 1999 Englewood baptizes over 100 members and reaches over 2000 in attendance under the leadership of Dr. Jett. He was currently serving as Pastor Emeritus.

On Thursday, December 14, Dr. Jett’s faith became sight! Our gratitude for a life well lived cannot be overstated. May we follow his example to live for God’s glory by serving others with the love of Jesus until we join him one day in heaven!
