Mary Steed Smith surrounded by her family, went to be with our Lord and Savior on February 28, 2026.
Mary Lena Steed was born January 26th, 1934, in Memphis, Tennessee to Asa Callier and Ida Burnett Steed. Her family moved from Memphis back to the Steed family's homeplace in Chester County TN in 1939. She had fond memories of growing up without electricity or running water in the house.
She graduated from Chester County HS and began the first of many adventures by working for the FBI in Washington DC before returning to Chester County where she worked briefly before marrying Troy Allen Smith, her husband of 58 years, and moving to Jackson to start a family. When Mary and Troy moved to Jackson, she was engaged in several social and community organizations. They were blessed with 3 wonderful children, and she became involved in her children's interests and activities including Girl Scouts, Band, Church, and Athletics. She strived to enrich her children with activities, education, and life experiences. She loved to travel and traveled extensively throughout North America, visiting 50 states and over 25 National Parks. She also traveled to Switzerland, Austria, and Germany. Mary was an active member of First Baptist Church Jackson for over 67 years. She enjoyed camping, gardening, and baking for holidays and family gatherings. One of her last memorable experiences was participating in her granddaughter's wedding as a Flower Girl. Grand Mother will long be remembered for her direct verbiage and many Maryisms.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Troy Allen Smith, Sr., two brothers, Billy Burnett Steed (Bill), and James Calier Steed (Jim).
She leaves behind her children Ida Marie, Troy Allen, Jr (Dorinda), and James Arnold (Toni); grandchildren Wade Callier Smith, Riley Elizabeth Smith Cottrell (Connor), and Pierson Alexander Smith (Mary Kelly); cats Star, and Honey
SERVICES: A time with family and friends will be held on Sunday, March 8, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Arrington Funeral Directors with a memorial service to follow at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. Jerry Drace and Mr. Mike Bledsoe officiating. There will be a private family internment at Ridgecrest Cemetery.
