Margaret Hickman Garland

April 20, 1925 — May 19, 2026

Jackson, TN

Margaret Hickman Garland passed away peacefully on May 19, 2026, in Jackson, Tennessee. Born on April 20, 1925, in Gibson County, Tennessee, Margaret lived a devoted and impactful life marked by her commitment to family, faith, and service.

Margaret began her professional journey working at BellSouth, where she faithfully conducted clerical work for several years. Her dedication and thorough understanding of the company made her an invaluable asset, and she could confidently claim to know everything there was to know about the place. She retired in 1982, ending a significant chapter of her professional life with resilience and pride.

One of Margaret’s proudest accomplishments was her family. Her deep love and unwavering devotion to them stood at the center of her life. In July of 1945, shortly after the conclusion of the war in Europe and the return of her future husband, Rev. Harry L. Garland, from his service with the 8th Air Force in England, Margaret and Harry were married. Their union was a testament to enduring love and partnership. Together, they served their community with distinction, particularly after Harry’s ordination to preach the gospel. Margaret stood beside him, contributing generously to the ministry and supporting his work with heartfelt dedication.

An active and beloved member of her church, Margaret had a passion for singing in the choir, where her voice and spirit uplifted many. She also took great joy in working with the youth group, nurturing young hearts and minds, and encouraging the future generations of their congregation.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Mike Garland (Joann) and Ken Garland; grandchildren, Michael Garland (Beth) and Kaylee Garland; and great-grandson, James Garland.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Harry L. Garland; parents, Herman and Mallie Hickman; daughter-in-law, Joy Jones Garland; sister, Hazel Hickman Martin; brother, Lawrence Milton Hickman; and an infant daughter.

Margaret's final resting will be honored with a graveside service on May 28, 2026, beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Oakland Cemetery, located at 800 S Brownsville Street in Trenton, Tennessee. Family, friends, and community members will gather there to celebrate the life of a woman whose legacy of love, service, and faith touched many.

She leaves behind a lasting memory of kindness and devotion, and her presence will be deeply missed by those who had the privilege to know her. Margaret Hickman Garland’s life stands as a tribute to the power of family, the strength found in faith, and the grace of a loving heart. Her story will continue to inspire all who remember her.
