Margaret Hiscox Dougan

Apr 24, 1953 — Jun 29, 2026

Jackson, TN

Margaret Clarkie Hiscox Dougan, a mother, grandmother, wife, friend, and tireless advocate for the special needs community, slipped from this life on June 29, 2026.

Born on April 24, 1953, in Jackson, Tennessee, Margaret spent a lifetime using her passion, gifts, and her B.Ed from Bethel College to pillar the education of the special needs community in Jackson and Madison County. She was the co-chair of the West Tennessee Down Syndrome Association, taught Special Education in the Jackson-Madison County School System (31 years), and founded Jonathan’s Kids program at Northside Church. For the last several years of her career in education, Margaret served as the visionary of the Transition Academy inside North Side High School, her alma mater. In those same halls, she met the man who would be her high school sweetheart and husband, Garey Dougan. Margaret and Garey began their life together on May 30, 1970, and they were married for 56 years. Margaret’s generous spirit ensured that their home was a place of parties, family gatherings, youth events, and a safe place for many teens in need of a place to be. Margaret and Garey are faithful members of Northside church where they were members of the Fellowship Sunday class.

She is survived by her loving husband, William Garey Dougan, Sr of Jackson, as well as their children: William Garey Dougan, Jr and his wife, Angie, of Hernando, MS; Mary Kathryn “Katey” Dougan Wysong and her husband, Keith, of Jackson; and Margaret “Meg” Alice Dougan Oliver of Collierville.

She is also survived by her grandchildren, who lovingly called her “Mammy” or “Marget.” Those include William Spencer Dougan, Rebekah Ellen Dougan, John Augustine Dougan, Margaret Downing Kingsbury, Max Owen Kingsbury, Elizabeth Clarkie Wysong, Henry Hamilton Wysong, Allison Reed Rogers Edwards (husband Logan), Patrick Ryan Rogers (wife Valencia), Kathryn Byers Rogers, William Gray Rogers, and one great-granddaughter, Eloise Clarkie Edwards.

Margaret’s siblings include John Hiscox and wife Beverly of Ellijay, GA, George Hiscox and wife Susan, of Jackson, and Mary Hiscox White and husband Buddy White (decd) of Jackson, as well as a special sister, Cecilia Norris of Jackson.

She was predeceased in death by her parents, Norman and Mickie Hiscox; grandparents Elmer and Eva Hiscox as well as Patrick and Gladys Hamilton; and her brother-in-law, Buddy White.

Today, Margaret wakes up to a Sun that never sets…Where birds stay far overhead, where salads have no dressing, and the fruit is for looking at.

Pallbearers will be Spencer Dougan, Patrick Rogers, John Dougan, Gray Rogers, Hamilton Wysong, and Stephen Hiscox.

Honorary pallbearers: Ricky Catlett, Tommy Cagle, Max Kingsbury, Victor Linear, Tom White, and Patrick White, and her special students.
