Joe David Smith passed away on November 1, 2023, in his hometown of Jackson, Tennessee. Born on September 4, 1933, in Jackson to the late Clayborn and Era Smith, Joe lived a fulfilling life filled with remarkable accomplishments and cherished connections.

 

He displayed an unyielding commitment to his different jobs and applied his skills diligently while working at Conalco, Walmart, Fuji, and at Jackson City Schools. He also worked as a painter for several years, adding to his many talents. 

 

Joe's dedication extended beyond his professional life. He devoted over forty years of service as the Sunday school superintendent at his local church—an admirable position that showcased his strong faith and innate leadership qualities. Additionally, he served as a church trustee for Faith Tabernacle and then New Life Tabernacle. Joe's unwavering commitment to Jesus left an indelible impact on those around him.

 

In addition to his professional and religious contributions, Joe also served his country with honor. He spent nine years in the National Guard—an experience that further shaped him into the disciplined and resilient individual he was known to be.

 

Amongst Joe's proudest accomplishments was driving one million miles accident-free during his tenure at Walmart and Fuji—a testament to his unwavering commitment to safety and responsibility. His dedication to protecting himself and others on the road is an exceptional feat that reflects his strong character.

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers and sister, Bobby Smith, Leon Smith, Charles Smith, and Patsy Huffstedler.  He was also preceded in death by his wife Thelma, his son David, and his granddaughter Jessica.

 

Joe leaves behind a host of family members and friends who will forever treasure his memory.  His wife of 45 years, Gracie Smith, was his rock and companion through life's triumphs and challenges. Their love and devotion set an example for others to aspire to. Joe's children were a constant source of pride and joy in his life. Bert Smith (Jessica), Twana Quick (Charles), Talida Rodgers (Dewayne), Lance Smith (Angela), Dustin Smith (Amy), and Joey Smith (Tracy) brought immense happiness to Joe's life, making each moment cherished and memorable. Joe is also survived by his sister, Linda Page, his grandchildren,  Mike Smith, Craig Quick, Victoria Smith, Chase Quick, Chance Smith (Molly), Bethany Hoopingarner (Brandon), Breanna Rodgers (Spencer), Riley Davis (Ailyss), Aniston Smith, Brooklyn Smith, Alyssa Smith, Landon Smith, Micah Smith, Asher Smith, Elias Smith, and Hannah Smith, and his great-grandchildren, Carter Smith, Mason Smith, Chad Smith, Taylor Smith, Cooper Smith, Mia Smith, Beau Davis, Annie Riley, Carsten Quick, Benjamin Hoopingarner, and Bentley McCaughan.

 

Services to honor Joe's memory will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 6, 2023, in the chapel of Arrington Funeral Directors.  The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 5, 2023 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.  The burial will take place at Ridgecrest Cemetery following the service. 

 

Joe David Smith's legacy will be cherished forever. He leaves behind a lasting impact on his community and a proud family whose lives were enriched by his love, guidance, and faith. May he rest in eternal peace.
