James "Jimmy" Eugene Stewart, Jr. passed away peacefully on June 7, 2026, in his hometown of Jackson, Tennessee. Born on June 14, 1946, Jimmy’s life spanned nearly eight decades of artistic dedication and joyful expression.
From his early days in Jackson, TN, Jimmy exhibited a passion for dance that would shape the course of his life. He pursued a career as a professional ballet dancer, captivating audiences with his technical skill and passionate performances. Beyond his achievements on stage, Jimmy was also a devoted teacher. His commitment to nurturing new talent led him to establish the Oakland Ballet Studio in Oakland, California, where he shared his profound knowledge and love of ballet with countless students. His studio became a beacon for aspiring dancers, reflecting his belief in the transformative power of the art form.
Jimmy was not only admired for his professional accomplishments but also cherished for his personality. He was known to his friends and students as an extremely fun person, a testament to his warm, engaging spirit that brought lighthearted joy and inspiration to those around him. His enthusiasm for life and dance was infectious, leaving an indelible impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Left to cherish his memory is his sister, Carole Stewart; sister-in-law, Lisa Stewart; niece, Alana Harrington (Ben); nephew, Kris Stewart (Kala); and great-nephew, Ted Harrington. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gene and Katherine Stewart; and brother, Robert Stewart.
James will be laid to rest at Chapel of the Chimes Mausoleum in Oakland, CA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church at https://fpcjacksontn.org/.
James Eugene Stewart, Jr.’s legacy is one of passion, dedication, and joy. His contributions to ballet, both as a performer and as an educator, will continue to resonate within the dance community for generations to come. He is fondly remembered and deeply missed.
