Garvalene Phelps Byrd

Garvalene P. Byrd entered her heavenly home on Easter Sunday, April 9, 2023, at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital at the age of 90.
She was born in Benton, KY on November 25, 1932, the daughter of the late Cletus and Chloe Tynes Phelps. She was married to Dr. Eldon Byrd who preceded her in death in 1992. Garvalene was a graduate of Union University and retired as an educator with the Madison County School system primarily with Beech Bluff Elementary. She and Dr. Byrd were members of West Jackson Baptist Church.
One of Garvalene’s passions was quilting for her grandchildren and others. She was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed painting as well. She took pride in her flower gardens and in her later years enjoyed a good book and doing word puzzles.
She is survived by her daughter, Jeannie Byrd of Jackson, TN; her son, Robert Byrd (Maureen) of Franklin, TN; three grandchildren, Matthew (Julie), Patrick (Caitlin), and Shannon Byrd and two great-grandchildren, Olivia Blake Byrd and Michael Matthew Byrd.
Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, James Garlon Phelps.
SERVICES: A funeral service for Garvalene will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 15, 2023, in the chapel of Arrington Funeral Directors, with Rev. Lonnie Sanders officiating. The burial will follow in Ridgecrest Cemetery.
The family will be receiving friends on Saturday, April 15, 2023, from 11:00 a.m. at Arrington Funeral Directors until the service at 1:00 p.m.
The family is requesting that memorial contributions be directed to West Jackson Baptist Church, 580 Oil Well Road, Jackson, TN 38305 or to Union University, 1050 Union University Drive, Jackson, TN 38305.
