Edward Thomas Sowell, a beloved figure in his community, was born on September 15, 1935, in Jackson, Tennessee. He passed away peacefully at his home on July 11, 2025, in the same city that had nurtured him throughout his life. Edward's warm spirit and hardworking nature defined both his personal and professional journeys.
A proud graduate of the Northside High School class of 1953, Edward embarked on a long-standing career with the railroad. He worked at GM&O/ICG Railroad and Edward’s commitment to his work remained unwavering. His dedication to his job mirrored his approach to life: diligent, steadfast, and filled with a quiet kindness that touched everyone he met.
Edward also served honorably in the Tennessee Army National Guard, demonstrating a strong sense of duty and commitment to his country. This service further exemplified his character, as he combined a love for his community and nation with genuine care for those around him.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Edward had a deep affection for his family and cherished many moments spent with his dogs. He was known not only for his hardworking demeanor but also for his gracious attitude, which endeared him to friends and family alike.
He is survived by his son, Tommy Sowell; sister, Christine Sisk; and his dog, Oakley. He was preceded in death by his wife, Billie Ruth Sowell; parents, JT and Beulah Sowell; brother, Odell Sowell; sister-in-law, Peggy Sowell; brother-in-law, Larry Sisk; and all his loving dogs.
A graveside service will be held on July 17, 2025, at Oakfield Cemetery in Oakfield, Tennessee. The service will commence at 1:00 PM and conclude at 2:00 PM. Edward’s life, marked by kindness, dedication, and love, will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege to know him.
