Dr. Donald R. Hopper

April 30, 1948 — May 2, 2026

JACKSON

Dr. Donald R. Hopper, age 78, of Jackson, Tennessee, passed away on May 2, 2026, in Jackson, Tennessee.

He was born on April 30, 1948, in Dyersburg, Tennessee, the son of the late Aaron Clyde and Dorothy Simpson Hopper and lived a life marked by faith, service, dedication, and love for his family, his patients, and his community.

Dr. Hopper was a Christian man whose life reflected the values he held dear. He was a graduate of Union University, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee. He carried the discipline and compassion he learned through his education into every part of his professional and personal life. He owned and operated Don R. Hopper OD in south Jackson for more than thirty years, where he became known not only as a skilled optometrist but also as a caring and trusted friend to countless patients and families. His practice was not only his profession, but it was also his heart. He loved his patients and was deeply passionate about their care, always taking the time to listen, to encourage, and to serve with kindness.

He was a long-time member of Meridian Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school for more than forty years. His devotion to his church family and his steady faith were an important part of who he was, and his presence was a blessing to many. He also served as a member of the South Jackson Civitan Club, where he gave of his time and energy in the spirit of fellowship and community involvement. Those who knew him will remember his warm smile, his generous heart, and the genuine interest he took in the lives of others.

Dr. Hopper had many interests that brought him joy throughout his life. He loved working in the yard and was meticulous about how it looked. He loved to grill and enjoyed grilling for family and friends. But everyone who knew Don Hopper knew that one of his greatest loves was a good sports car. Over the years, he had many and especially liked riding in his convertible with the top down. He also had a playful side, told tall tales, and was known as a prankster, never hesitating to pull a good one on a friend. His sense of humor and easygoing nature were a constant presence in his life, even in the last months when he was not well.

He is survived by his wife of thirty-one years, Susan Higdon Hopper; his sisters-in-law, Nancy Tucker and her husband Tommy, and Anita Simmons; his nephews, Zachary Tucker and Ben Hoskins and his wife Tabitha; his niece, Rebecca Tucker McCann and her husband Kyle; his canine companion, Max Lawrence Hopper; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. He also leaves behind many close friends, patients, church members, and neighbors whose lives were enriched by his presence.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Betty Ruth Hopper.

A time with family and friends will be held on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Meridian Baptist Church, 161 Harts Bridge Road, Jackson, TN.  A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Meridian Baptist Church with Tommy Tucker, Ben Hoskins and Tim Bass officiating.

Dr. Hopper will be remembered for his devotion to his family, especially to Susan. He will also be remembered for his steadfast faith, his commitment to his profession, and the kindness he extended to others throughout his life. Don believed that all people were God’s creations and all should be treated with love, respect, and kindness. His legacy is one of service, integrity, and love, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
