Dr. Don L. Huneycutt

Dr. Don L. Huneycutt died June 2, 2026. He was born September 1, 1941, in Greer, South Carolina to Hubert and Ventie Sloan Huneycutt. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Kathleen Huneycutt, a son Roger Aaron Huneycutt (Frederique), Wichita, KS, a daughter Leah Kathryn Maeding (David), Denver, CO, two stepsons, Andrew Lawrence Keim (Courtney), Louisville, KY, and John Todd Keim, Jackson, TN, three grandchildren Kaleb Matthew Keim, Tyler Jae Huneycutt, and Amita Lillian Keim. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife Marolyn White Huneycutt.

Dr. Huneycutt taught music for 45 years at Lambuth College, (University of Memphis- Lambuth Campus). He retired as Professor of Music, Emeritus. He held a Bachelors of Music degree from Stetson University, summa cum laude, a Master’s degree from Louisiana State University, and a Doctor of Arts degree from the University of Mississippi. At Lambuth, he served as Chairman of the Music Department, Dean of Records and the chair of many ranking committees.

Dr. Huneycutt was listed in Outstanding Young Men in America, the Editor of the Tennessee Music Teacher’s Newsletter, President of the Jackson Community Concert Association, President of the Tennessee Collegiate Athletic Conference and many awards from Lambuth University.

Dr. Huneycutt was well- known as a solo performer, four-hand recitalist with his deceased wife, Marolyn, adjudicator and accompanist. He also presented for several years at the Tennessee School of the Humanities with Dr. Lawrence Allen Ray. He was featured soloist with the LSU Symphony and The Jackson Symphony Orchestra, once conducting “Sleighride” at the annual Christmas Concert. Most notably, he accompanied and arranged for Laurice Lanier, Mezzo Soprano from Jackson, TN on many occasions including a highly successful tour of Brazil as well as her senior recital at The Juilliard School. He was a skilled arranger of hymns and compositions and played for many churches in and around Jackson.

He enjoyed tennis, was an avid Dodgers and sports fan, attending every Lambuth sporting event, and running the time clock for the Lambuth Men’s Basketball teams under Coach Dr. “Pepper” Bray.

Dr. Huneycutt’s joy were his students, staying in touch with them and in many cases teaching their children, his grand students, at Lambuth which he said was a magical family connection. His love and passion for music, his emotional intensity and desire for imparting it was his mission.

The family would like to thank the staff at Alexandria Place Assisted Living and Beacon Hospice for their care and kindness and Vernell Manning, his caretaker.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Friends of Music at St Luke’s Episcopal Church or the Jackson Memorial Carillon Fund at First Presbyterian Church.

SERVICES: A memorial service honoring Don's life will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. The Very Reverend Bruce D. McMillan will preside. A private interment will be held at Ridgecrest Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of Arrington Funeral Directors.
