Charles Ghelen Buck, a cherished family man, and respected community member, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2026, at the age of 98 in Jackson, Tennessee.
He was born on February 28, 1927, in Beech Bluff, Tennessee, the son of the late Charles H. and Delia McMurray Buck. Ghelen led a life marked by dedication, service, and the love of his family and friends.
Charles lived a full and rewarding life, retiring as a supervisor in the Water Division from the former Jackson Utility Division, now known as Jackson Energy Authority. His work ethic and leadership were an inspiration to many, and his contributions to the community were deeply valued. A man of faith, Ghelen was a long-standing member and former deacon of Beech Bluff Baptist Church, where he lived his Christian values and served as a model of kindness and compassion to all who knew him.
As a proud veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II, where he attained the rank of Sergeant. His service to his country was a significant part of his life's narrative, instilling in him a sense of discipline and respect that he carried throughout his years.
Ghelen found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was often seen riding his 4-wheeler around his yard, a testament to his spirited nature. His passion for sports was evident in his unwavering support for the University of Tennessee and the St. Louis Cardinals. Charles also cherished the time spent in his garden and bush hogging his property, activities that brought him peace and contentment.
Above all else, he was a loving and kind man. He is survived by his devoted daughters, Rita Amis and her husband Tommy of Huron, Shelia Hillis of Jackson, and Sherry Sorrell and her husband Kelly of Jackson. His legacy continues through his grandsons, Tim Amis and Johnathan Sorrell, who will remember their grandfather with great admiration and love.
Along with his parents, Ghelen was preceded in death by his wife of seventy-two years, Mary Magdolene Buck in 2021, a sister, Helen Usery, a brother, Kenneth Buck, a granddaughter, Christy Amis and a son-in-law, John Hillis.
SERVICES: A time with family and friends honoring Ghelen's life will be held on Monday, February 23, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Arrington Funeral Directors, with a funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Charlie Crouthers and Rev. Opie Dodrell officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Springs Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Beech Bluff, TN.
Pallbearers will be Johnathan Sorrell, Tim Amis, Steve Thomas, Larry Evans Brian Arnold and Scotty Daniels.
The family is requesting that memorial contributions be directed to Gideon's International or to the Maple Springs Cemetery Fund.
Ghelen's life was one of purpose and impact, touching the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know him. His memory will be treasured by his family, friends, and all who were graced by his generous spirit and warm heart. He will be remembered not only for the roles he played but for the person he was a loving father, a dedicated friend, and a true gentleman of spirited character.
