Obituary

Bettye Ann Claxon Lane, age 95, of Jackson, TN, passed away on February 8, 2026, at her home at The Pointe at LifeSpring (Knoxville, TN) surrounded by loved ones.

Born on November 24, 1930 in Greenfield, TN, to Paul C. Claxon and Margaret M. Claxon, Bettye attended school in Marks, MS, Birmingham, AL, and Greenfield, TN, and worked various jobs throughout her career–at Dealers Tractor and Equipment Company of Memphis, Lucy Lee Hospital and Public Loan and Finance Company of Poplar Bluff, MO, the TN Valley Life Insurance Company, North Side High School, and Procter and Gamble Manufacturing Company in Jackson, TN (where she retired in 1993).

She married Benton Lane on September 11, 1949, and loved raising a family with him, laughing with him as he played pranks on neighbors and friends, playing cards with the infamous "Dirty Dozen" card bunch, and watching their children grow up, marry, and have children of their own. They were long-time, active members of Englewood Baptist Church in Jackson, and Bettye was a member at Inskip Baptist Church after she moved to Knoxville. She is described by those who knew her best and loved her most as encouraging, warm, gracious, and classy and will be remembered for her amazing stories, gentle curiosity, and generous heart. Her greatest joy was in her love for Jesus, her husband Benton, their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Bettye is preceded in death by her father Paul C. Claxon, her mother Margaret Claxon, her sister Nancy Lynn Claxon, and her husband William Benton Lane. She is survived by sons William Mark Lane (Ann), John Ladd Lane (Pam), and daughter Nancy Lane Sterling (Rob). She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Ashley Lane Warren (Matt), Jonathan W. Lane, Becca Lane Edwards, John Benton Lane, Elizabeth Ann Lane Pavelka (Josh), William E. Sterling (Zach), and Brent C. Sterling (Lizzie). She also leaves behind nine great grandchildren (and one on the way) and there was no end to how much they delighted her.

In her last years, she was well cared for and well loved by the attentive and kind nurses, caregivers, and staff at LifeSpring Assisted Living in Knoxville, TN. Her last days were eased by the compassionate care of Acacia Rutledge and the team at Shalom Hospice in Knoxville, TN.
