Barry Lee Joyce, age 71, a loving husband, father, and grandfather, went to be with our Lord and Savior on Friday, August 11, 2023, after a brief and valiant fight against cancer.
Born in Jackson, TN on Monday, January 21, 1952, he was the second of four children to the late Mary Dee Fisher and Alton Lee Joyce. Barry spent his entire life in Jackson, graduating from Northside High School, then earned his Bachelor of Science in Business and Accounting from Union University. He passed the CPA Exam in August 1981.
Barry began his career at Arnold Spain & Company CPA Firm. The majority of his career was spent with West Tennessee Healthcare, starting at Humboldt General Hospital as the Controller. He then moved to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital as the Director of Accounting, Director of Capital and Finance, and his last title was Executive Director of Finance and Capital. He retired in December 2016 after 31 years of service.
Having a strong work ethic, Barry was widely known for his honesty and sincere kindness. There was always a smile on his face, and he always put the needs of others before his own. He was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. He maintained a positive outlook on life and found daily blessings, even during his cancer struggles. It was at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital where he met his soulmate and love of his life, Calista Creed Moore. They blended their families to become one and shared 23 years of marriage and happiness.
Barry’s true joy was his family and spending time with his children and grandchildren. A very dedicated father, he spent many years coaching their sports teams and loved taking groups on camping and canoeing trips. Relishing in the beauty of God’s creation, Barry spent as much time as he could outdoors.
He treasured family times and gatherings. Loving to travel, he was a great trip planner and known for his extensive itineraries to maximize every minute. Barry loved listening to music and playing his guitar and was an avid golfer who looked forward to playing multiple times a week with his friends and family and cherished the Fall Golf Trips. He was passionate about the University of TN Vols football and looked forward to the game days in Knoxville.
Most importantly, Barry Joyce loved the Lord! A long-time faithful member of First Baptist Church, he served on multiple committees, taught youth & adult Sunday school classes, participated in the Brazil Mission team, and was Chairman of the Finance committee. He was ordained as a Deacon and was set to serve as Chairman of the Deacons at the time of his cancer diagnosis.
Those left to forever cherish his memory and who will miss him tremendously are his devoted wife, Calista, who stood by his side; sons, Brian Joyce of Memphis, TN, and Ben Joyce of Collierville, TN; daughter, Jordan Dyer (Dylan), of Henderson, TN; stepdaughter, Emily Moore of Los Angeles, California; stepson, Andrew Moore of Humboldt, Tennessee; grandchildren, Eli Joyce, and Hadley, Adeline and Hayes Dyer of Henderson, TN; sisters, Shirley Roberts (Jimmy) and Janice Stanford (Arvie); brother, Ricky Joyce (Mary); plus numerous nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his beloved fur baby, Mia.
