Albert Edward Whalley III, lovingly known as “Papaw” to his grandchildren and “Big Ed” to those closest to him, was born on March 23, 1946, in Jackson, Tennessee, to the late Albert Edward Whalley, Jr. and Doris Mai Barnes Whalley.
Albert (“Ed”) graduated from Battle Ground Academy in Nashville, TN in 1964, and went on to earn a Bachelor's Degree in mathematics from Lambuth College in 1968. He began his career as a teacher, sharing his love of learning with junior high school students. It was at Lambuth where he met the love of his life, Brenda Eldridge. They were married on February 14, 1969, and together built a marriage rooted in love, laughter, projects, volunteerism, and devotion to family. They raised two children, Laura and Edward, who were his greatest joy.
Ed carried forward the work begun by his parents at Whalley Construction Company. Under his leadership, Whalley Construction grew as a respected underground utility contractor serving West Tennessee, with offices also located in Memphis, TN; Atlanta, GA; and Panama City, FL. The company included divisions specializing in golf course construction, irrigation, and railroad contracting, leaving a legacy of quality and dedication that extended far beyond West Tennessee.
Among his proudest personal accomplishments was the Cabin on the Tennessee
River—affectionately known as “Whalley World”—a gathering place filled with family, friends, and countless memories. His focus was always on people and relationships.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Brenda Eldridge Whalley; and his sister, Margaret Donelson Whalley.
He is survived by his daughter, Laura Whalley Easter (Josh), and his son, Albert Edward Whalley IV (Stacey); his cherished grandchildren, Alexandria Whalley Hardy (Phillip), Frannie Easter Hogan (Matt), Jack Easter, Braden Mott (Emma), Bryce Mott, and Joshua Todd; and his brother, David Whalley (Francie Mello); and his many beloved nieces and nephews.
Ed leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and devotion to his family that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be remembered for his loving heart, his humor, and the way he always put others first.
His life was a testament to the importance of family, hard work, and love—and his family finds peace in knowing that he is reunited with Brenda, his greatest wish since the moment she left this Earth.
